What is Humanities Week?
Humanities Week is an annual week of events and activities celebrating the humanities, and a student conceived and produced program of the Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures (IHGC).
Why "Care"?
In this fast-paced internet dominated era, the gap between people often appears to be growing wider. To many students, especially those who are new at UVA, the feeling of not belonging can be quite common, as genuine connections and care seems elusive. It’s easier than ever to find content that is meant to be negative and divide us, and this can take a toll on your mental health and warp your perception of yourself. Our goal with Humanities Week 2024 is to re-establish positive connections with ourselves and others with the theme, “CARE”.
One interesting interpretation of Humanities is Human(I)Ties. As human beings, we are meant to look for and establish meaningful “Ties”, or connections, with the world. These “Ties'' include our connections with other people, plants, animals, the environment, cultures, etc. While there are many ways to make “Ties”, we believe that caring is one of the most important ones. We want to ask questions, such as: “How do you care?”, and, “How have the things you care about affected you as a person?”. Most of all we want to explore what it really means to care, and how caring about others regardless of any categorization or background can create a more inclusive and accepting environment.
In Humanities Week 2024, we will do a variety of fun and creative events that allow us to explore and reflect on how to care for ourselves, people around us, animals, plants, and the environment. Join us and show how you care! Humanities Week is an annual student-produced program of the Institute of the Humanities & Global Cultures (IHGC).
